CYGNI: All Guns Blazing is a twin-stick, vertical-scrolling shooter that combines the nostalgic feel of classic games with next-gen, high-quality graphics and animations, delivering intense and action-packed gameplay.
“CYGNI: All Guns Blazing” is a sci-fi shooter developed by KeelWorks and published by KONAMI. It will be released on August 6, 2024 and will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store and Blacknut.
How It All Began
Set in a futuristic world, the game follows Earth’s military forces, who are stationed among the ruins of a long-lost civilization on the planet CYGNI. They face a relentless assault by a formidable alien biomechanical race. Players, as one of the last pilots on the surviving fleet’s mothership, must navigate a powerful fighter jet to endure and fight back against the continuous alien onslaught.
Gameplay Rundown
The gameplay is simple: take down waves of enemies on each level, battle your way to the boss, survive until the end, and move on to the next stage. Unlike traditional flight shooters, CYGNI features dual-mode gameplay. Your fighter jet comes with a variety of weapons and shields, adding a layer of depth for strategy.
The red bar below the jet indicates weapon energy, while the blue bar represents the shield. Basic machine gun fire doesn’t deplete the red energy bar, but using homing missiles does. The jet also has ground attack weapons for taking out enemy forces and structures, with some large ground bosses only vulnerable to these attacks.
The blue energy bar tracks shield strength. Significant enemy hits are needed to break a shield segment, which doesn’t regenerate on its own. To replenish it, you need energy orbs dropped by defeated enemies. These orbs usually restore the shield, but you can also convert shield energy into weapon energy and collect more orbs to refill the shield, balancing overflow and weapon recharge.
This dual-mode gameplay introduces a new level of strategy beyond traditional setups, requiring players to balance their offensive and defensive tactics. If your shields run out, it’s game over (though on easy mode, you have three lives, running out of shields still means game over). Additionally, you need to manage weapon energy to effectively launch homing missiles and eliminate enemies swiftly.
After finishing levels, players are awarded skill points based on enemy kills and completion time. These points can be used to upgrade the fighter jet’s machine guns and homing missiles, which becomes crucial as the game gets tougher. You can also replay earlier levels to gather more skill points for further upgrades.
Initially, managing the various weapons and energy systems may seem daunting, but with practice, it becomes intuitive, making the controls relatively straightforward in the long run.
Crisp Sounds and Dazzling Visuals for Days
The visual effects are striking, featuring carefully crafted environmental details. The expansive scenes create an impression of flying and fighting across a wide open sky. Realistic explosions and lighting effects enhance the experience, resembling a high-definition sci-fi film.
The sound effects are equally impressive. The timing of machine gun fire, homing missiles, and explosions is spot-on, and when paired with the grand orchestral music, the immersion is deep, making you feel fully immersed in the game.
All Guns Blazing Indeed
CYGNI: All Guns Blazing blends cutting-edge graphics with classic shooter elements, delivering a gaming experience that’s both nostalgic and innovative. The dual-mode gameplay introduces strategic depth, challenging players to manage both offense and defense while testing their reflexes and improving gameplay. The finely detailed visuals and sound effects make every battle feel like an exhilarating sci-fi blockbuster. From the spectacular explosions to the realistic sound design, the game is highly immersive. It also features local co-op for up to two players, allowing you to join forces with a friend to take down enemies.
Although the trial version was limited in content, the game shows great potential, and I’m excited to see what unique features the full release will offer!
