As you’re all aware, Genshin Impact‘s version 5.0 will introduce Natlan and many fans were outraged at some if not all of the character designs; this lead them to start a petition. The petition started on July 7, 2024 and has since gained a total of over 50,000 signatures as of today.
Natlan draws its inspiration primarily from Latin America, featuring characters inspired by African deities. However, all these characters have been depicted as white, prompting some fans to advocate for a boycott unless developer Hoyoverse alters its approach.
Even some of the voice actors have joined in speaking out about the whitewashing of people of color in their games.

This isn’t exactly the first time that fans were angry at HoYoverse as the Sumeru region was added in version 3.0 in 2022. The forest region draws inspiration from South Asian cultures, particularly Indian influences. Similar to the Natlan controversy, there were criticisms regarding cultural representation, with some players and observers expressing concerns about stereotypes and the depth of cultural understanding reflected in the game. These discussions highlighted ongoing debates about cultural sensitivity and the portrayal of diverse cultures in gaming.
Take Cyno and Dehya for example.
Some fans have taken it upon themselves to change the characters’ design.

The petition initiated by Genshin Impact’s portrayal of Natlan has expanded its scope to encompass all games developed by HoYoverse, urging them to cease practices of cultural appropriation and whitewashing characters. This broader call reflects growing concerns among players and communities about respectful and authentic representation of diverse cultures in gaming.
