Illustrator Nicholas Kole revealed via X/Twitter that Crash Bandicoot 5 was in development, but ended up being cancelled. He recently confirmed the cancellation of a purported Crash 5 project, presumably under development by Toys for Bob.
When Microsoft announced its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, the gaming community felt hopeful anticipation, especially regarding the futures of Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon. Many fans expected these beloved franchises, now potentially under Xbox’s stewardship, to receive revitalization and renewed prominence. Furthermore, Activision Blizzard has cancelled more than just this in 2024.
However, developments since then have not been as promising. Despite initial optimism, there has been a conspicuous lack of updates on Crash or Spyro post-acquisition. Notably, Toys for Bob, formerly involved with Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, has shifted focus to indie development, with an upcoming title under Microsoft’s wing. Nevertheless, the outlook for Crash and Spyro hasn’t been clear.
The revelation of a cancelled version of “Crash 5” has further dampened spirits. Nicholas Kole took to Twitter to share this disheartening news, revealing that a project he had worked on, known as Project Dragon, concluded after years of effort.
It is not Spyro, but some day folks will hear about the Crash 5 that never was and it’s gonna break hearts

This announcement not only disappointed Kole’s followers but also sparked concerns among Spyro enthusiasts who had hoped for news of a new installment. With the cancellation of Crash Bandicoot 5, the future remains uncertain for Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon fans, who may have to brace themselves for more disappointing updates ahead.
