In celebration of Dragon Quest Day today, series creator Yuji Horii has shared a short update on the development of the upcoming Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate.

I’m sorry for the worry about Dragon Quest XII, but I was actually having a meeting about it until just a bit ago. While I can’t share much yet, I want it to be something worthy of the posthumous work of the two people (Akira Toriyama and Koichi Sugiyama) who passed away. I’ll do my best!Yuji Horii
Earlier this year, Akira Toriyama, the creator of the highly popular Dragon Ball manga series and the artist behind the Dragon Quest titles, passed away due to acute subdural hematoma. The game’s composer Koichi Sugiyama passed away in 2021 at the age of 90.
Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate was originally announced in May 2021 via the Dragon Quest 35th Anniversary Special broadcast, and is described to have a more mature and darker take on the long-running JPRG series.
Since then, there has been no update, with no expected release date or platforms announced yet either.
Aside from Yuji Horii giving a brief update on Dragon Quest XII today on Dragon Quest Day, Square Enix has also given an update for the HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest III with platforms now confirmed.
