In the last quarter, Sony Interactive Entertainment has shipped over 4.5 million units, thus making over 59 million consoles sold in total. This is almost equivalent to the sales of PlayStation 4 at the same point in its lifecycle.
Microsoft, on the other hand, faced a 31% year-on-year drop in its console sales, although note that specific figures have not been revealed by the company.
That said, interestingly, PlayStation 5 sales did dropped by 29% year-on-year, despite consoles sales are up for the year as a whole.
This shows that console sales are slowing across the industry, although PlayStation consoles are selling more than Xbox Series X|S.
The financial report also noted that sales in PlayStation games segment increased by 17% year-on-year, and operating income increased by 40.2bn yen year-on-year to a 290.2bn yen total.
As announced yesterday, Sony Corporation Group named PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst as CEO of Studio Business Group, while Hideaki Nishino has been assigned to lead as CEO of Platform Business Group.
