Street Fighter Live-Action Film in the Works

A live-action Street Fighter film could be in the works as Capcom mentioned in its earnings report and strategies for this fiscal year.

In the Capcom FY25/3 Overview of Strategies and Plans document, the company talked about its upcoming business strategies.

Under the 4-4 Other Businesses – Character Contents, eSports/Media strategy segment, there is a pointer that reads as follows:

“Media business will increase focus on production of content, including live-action Street Fighter film, as part of critical strategy to expand sales of titles globally.

This lines up with a previous report by The Hollywood Reporter, which noted that Legendary Pictures has acquired rights to film and TV based on the fighting game series.

Given how it is phrased, it likely meant that a live-action film of the fighting game series had been greenlit and that Capcom would put focus into the production as part of its critical strategy this fiscal year.

Considering the success of the Street Fighter series, which sold 54 million units cumulatively, it makes sense for Capcom to pursue more cross-media content for the franchise, expanding the Street Fighter branding.

Interestingly, this also meant that we might see other Capcom franchises getting cross-media content as Capcom looking to “increase focus on production of content”. A reminder that there is actually a Devil May Cry animated series in the works by Netflix and Adi Shankar, the man behind the highly praised Castlevania anime adaptation.

This is not the first time that a Street Fighter live-action movie has been made as Hollywood made moves on the franchise back in the 90s with a film that starred Jean-Claude Van Damme as Col. Guile.

More than a decade later, another movie was released in the form of Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li in 2009, which was sadly a commercial and critical bomb.

As of the games, fan-favorite Akuma was recently announced to be unleashing his Raging Demon soon in Street Fighter 6 as a DLC character, coming next week.

Street Fighter 6 is now available on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.
