Creator Hidetaki Miyazaki has confirmed that Shadow of the Erdtree is the first and last DLC for Elden Ring, but it may not be the end of the franchise as a possible sequel is not ruled out.
This is according to an interview with the Chinese outlet Zhihu, where Miyazaki gave a few new snippets of information regarding the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC.
One of the key information is that Shadow of the Erdtree will be the only DLC for Elden Ring with no further content currently planned.
The reason given was that having a single DLC helps to maintain the sense of exploration. “Instead of splitting it into several parts, it is better to simply make one big one,” he explained.
“If we sold separate DLC, the freedom of exploration and sense of adventure would be reduced.”
While no further content is planned, Miyazaki noted that it had not been decided whether the entire story of Elden Ring concludes in Shadow of the Erdtree.
He also mentioned that FromSoftware typically loves to leave some possibilities for future games, hinting that the studio does rule out a possible sequel for Elden Ring.
This is not the first time that Miyazaki has spoken about not ruling out any possible sequel for Elden Ring, as in a previous interview, he also expressed that “there could well be something in the future.”
Aside from that, Miyazaki also mentioned that Shadow of the Erdtree will be answering some of the biggest lore mysteries from the main game. Note that potential spoilers follow.
In the interview, Miyazaki said that St. Trina, a mysterious figure who was mentioned frequently in the lore, will be making her appearances in the DLC.
The DLC will also not affect the main game’s ending and while Shadow of the Erdtree has no definitive ending itself, Miyazaki mentioned that it has choices that the Tarnished have to make throughout.
Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC is slated to launch for the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via Steam on June 21, 2024.
