Wizards of the Coast will be releasing the latest set to Magic: The Gathering (MTG), titled “Outlaws of Thunder Junction“, bringing in Wild West trope into the world of Magic.
Outlaws of Thunder Junction is set for a full release for tabletop on 19 April 2024, with WPN exclusive pre-release experiences to be held from 12 April to 18 April 2024.
Starting from 12 April 2024, Magic players in Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand can participate in a treasure hunt, with a special Bounty Card on hand for a chance to win prizes.
Welcome to Thunder Junction, a lawless plane of brazen outlaws and warped
morals. It all happened when the mysterious Omenpaths opened, leading villains
from across the Multiverse to a new frontier of opportunity. The prize every gang
ruthlessly seeks? The treasures of Maag Taranau (“The Vault”). With the
wayfaring villain, Oko, rustling up his heist-crew featuring the Multiverse’s most
wanted, it’s up to his son Kellan to either beat ‘em, or join ‘em.
The Time of Outlaws!
In Thunder Junction, criminals run amok to a point that creature types such as Rogues, Assassins, Pirates, Warlocks, or Mercenaries are collectively referred to as “Outlaws“.
Aside from Outlaws, there are also new mechanics to be looking out for; for example, the “more devious-minded criminals will Plot, exiling a card face-up for its plot cost to cast on a later turn without paying its mana cost.”
“For villains of a less subtle nature, Spree grants instants and sorceries several dastardly and chaotic effects that can be paid with an additional cost.”
Furthermore, there is also Mount, an outlaw’s favorite which can be activated by “tapping any number of creatures a player controls with total power equal to or greater than the Mount creature’s Saddle value. They will be saddled until the end of the turn, triggering powerful additional abilities.”
Crime Runs Rampant in Omenport!
Thunder Junction is a lawless place and winners won’t play by the rules. Whenever a player targets an opponent or their hand, permanents, spells, library, or graveyard, they are labeled as committing a Crime.
This serves as the basis for the Breaking News Bonus Sheet, a collection of reprints themed exclusively to the set. In every Play Booster pack, players can score one Breaking News card, with an added chance to acquire a textured foil version in the Collector Booster pack.
What’s in the Ancient Vault?
Aside from Breaking News, outlaws will risk their lives to uncover the mysteries of The Vault, a subset of Standard-legal cards in this set.
This subset of cards features 30 different Mythic Rares, that may even appear in Vault Frame and Raised Foil treatments.
Riches Abound in Thunder Junction!
Outlaws of Thunder Junction also features special card treatments with Borderless Art cards making a return in a selection of Rares and Mythic Rares, along with 10 Special Guests that will be available in foil and non-foil as part of The List.
These iconic cards can be found in Play Boosters and Collector Boosters.
Embracing the spirit of the frontier, this set also features Full-Art Basic Lands that capture the scenery of the set.
Lastly, the most notorious villains of Thunder Junction will be featured in the Wanted Poster showcase treatment, exclusive to Oko’s gang of the Multiverse’s big bad, namely Vraska, Kellan, Annie Flash, Rakdos, and Tinybones. All can be found in Play and Collector Boosters. As mentioned, Outlaws of Thunder Junction will be released in full for tabletop on April 19, 2024, and will be available in Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Commander Decks, Pre-release Packs and Bundles.
