The world of Dragon’s Dogma 2 is treacherous, which is why Portcrystals come in handy in allowing you to safely travel to your destinations without needing to face sudden monster ambushes that can happen when riding oxcarts. Portcrystals are valuable assets, serving as an anchor for you to fast travel to with the use of the Ferrystone items. Some towns or villages do have permanent stationary Portcrystals, but there are many places where you may need to use a rare reuseable Portcrystal item to set up teleportation anchors.
There is only a handful of reusable Portcrystals obtainable throughout Dragon’s Dogma 2, but it is honestly enough as you only need to set up teleportation anchors in certain major towns that you will be traveling often to. In this guide, we will go through where you can find reusable Portcrystals.
Do note that this guide may contain spoilers.
#1 – Follow the Main Story and Complete Captain Brant’s Quests
For the first reusable Portcrystal, it is thankfully quite easy to obtain as long as you follow through the main questline with Captain Brant after you arrive at Vernworth. This questline will have you complete several quests such as Monster Culling, The Caged Magistrate, The Nameless Village, and more.
Eventually, you will reach one final objective given to you by Brant, which is called “Feast of Deception“. This quest would require you to wear appropriate clothing and attend your coronation as the Sovran. For this, you can simply wear the Courtly Tunic and Courtly Breeches that you had obtained from The Stolen Throne quest prior to this, or simply walk into nobles’ houses and get your full sets “legally”.
Talk to Brant to trigger a cutscene then wait a few days before speaking with him again to obtain your Portcrystal and proceed to your next main story objective.
Important Note: Completing “Feast of Deception” will change the world state, so it is highly advisable to go through some side quests first before proceeding.
#2 – Follow Glyndwr’s Questline
While you are at Vernworth, you may come across a rather peculiar archer standing right in front of Roderick’s Smithy. This man is Glyndwr and he stands out among the crowd since he is the only elf in Vernworth.
Talking to him for the first time will initiate the first part of the quest, which is the “Gift of the Bow“. Simply give him any human-made bow, and the quest will continue. Glyndwr’s quests are straightforward and you shouldn’t have a problem with it. His quest will also lead you to Sacred Arbor, the elven town.
The next part of his quest is “A Trial of Archery“, and you will be tasked to save his sister Doireann from an Ogre. Save Doireann and speak to Taliesin, Glyndwr’s father, outside the Ogre’s lair to acquire your Portcrystal.
#3 – Forested Griffin’s Nest at the Misty Marshes
As you explore the northwest part of the map, you may come across a very foggy area known as the Misty Marshes. This is a dangerous zone where Skeletons and Undead surround you to make your life miserable as it is also quite difficult to traverse around due to low visibility.
This is also a place where you may find a reusable Portcrystal, just lying there in the open in a Griffin’s nest. As mentioned, it is difficult to find your way around in the thick fog but the advice is to climb ledges along the base of the mountain to the south instead of following the brazier-lit pathways. You will eventually find your way to the Forested Griffin’s Nest, where you can simply run up to the nest and grab your Portcrystal along with other valuable items. Of course, a Griffin may appear there, so be careful and be ready to fight for your life.
#4 – Riddle Me This, Sphinx
The next Portcrystal can be obtained by solving riddles given by the elusive Sphinx. Correction, you can actually obtain 2 Portcrystals from the Sphinx if you choose to do so.
The Sphinx is a very hidden NPC and boss you can find around the northwest part of the map. Like the creature from the myth, she will ask you riddles to solve. For the Portcrystals, the riddles to solve are the Riddle of Madness and the Riddle of Conviction.
Riddle of Madness is the second riddle and she will ask you to bring your most beloved to her. The thing to note for the riddles is to not overthink it. Sure, you may be thinking of characters you have romanced or have a high affinity with, which are indeed correct answers. But the easiest way to solve this puzzle without backtracking is just to bring all of your pawns onto the pedestal and submit your answer. The second treasure chest will be unsealed and you will get a Portcrystal from it.
Meanwhile, Riddle of Conviction asks you to give the Sphinx your most-priced item in the chance that she will not return the item. Do not let her words fool you as in reality, you can simply give her any item and clear this riddle. The trick is that any item will do as when the fourth chest is unsealed, you will get your submitted item back and another duplicate of it.
So the best result for this riddle is to give her something you would love to duplicate, preferably rare ones such as a Portcrystal, but the choice is yours.
#5 – Visit the Dragonforged
The last Portcrystal can be found from a merchant NPC named The Dragonforged. This gentleman resides at Bay Wayside Shrine, a coastal cave northeast of Bakbattahl. The Dragonforged is a vendor NPC that sells rare items in exchange for Wyrmslife Crystals (WLC) as currency, and he is also the only smithy for you to do Wyrmfire Enhancements to bring your equipment to much higher ranks that normal enhancements cannot.
A Portcrystal is one of the items he sells and it is available for 20 WLC. To earn WLC, the best source is to slay various draconic enemies in the game, especially the Drake. Upon visiting the Bay Wayside Shrine for the first time, there are already 5 Wyrmslife Crystals sitting there free for you.
Best Locations to Place Your Portcrystals
Now that you have obtained some portable reusable Portcrystals, you may be unsure where to place them. As mentioned, you actually only need to place a few of them because you are not going to travel to some places much in later parts of the game.
Take note that there are two permanent Portcrystals already stationed at Vernworth and Harve Village respectively. For recommended locations to place your Portcrystals, we advise having them placed at very hidden places with no oxcart service available for ease of travel.
Sacred Arbor is a great place because the area toward the town is quite difficult to traverse and you will be visiting the location a few times for side quests. We also recommend placing one at Volcanic Island Camp as the location is quite far from other main towns.
If you are working on solving the riddles from the Sphinx, you can temporarily place a Portcrystal at her lair’s entrance for ease of travel. Despite having an oxcart service available, we do recommend Bakbattahl as it is one of the most visited areas in the later parts of the game.
