Coinciding with the acquisition of Gearbox Entertainment by Take-Two Interactive, Borderlands 4 has been confirmed to be in development.
In a press release by Take-Two Interactive, the company announced the news of the acquisition of Gearbox Entertainment, while detailing the future plans for the company.
Within the news, they mentioned that Gearbox Entertainment currently has six key interactive entertainment projects in development, which include five sequels. They later revealed that two of those sequels are from the Borderlands and Homeworld franchises.
Aside from those, there will also be at least one new intellectual property being developed, but no further information has been revealed on what that may be.
While this is far from an official release date, this statement at least confirms that Borderlands 4 is in active development. Considering that it has been 5 years since Borderlands 3 was released, one can speculate that more news about the sequel will follow soon.
It’s worth noting that even though Gearbox Entertainment was previously acquired by Embracer Group, Take-Two has already acquired a long-term publishing deal for the Borderlands series. So now with Take-Two Interactive fully acquiring Gearbox Entertainment, the two companies can now work more closely together in the development for the next Borderlands release.
“With nearly 20 years of history working together, Gearbox has played an integral role in our success, given their unique ability to create interactive entertainment experiences that feature beloved characters, exciting new worlds, and humorous storytelling,” said David Ismailer, President of 2K.
“We are thrilled to welcome Randy Pitchford and his team of passionate, talented developers to 2K and we look forward to releasing numerous projects in the future as colleagues. We have loved partnering with Gearbox on every iteration of the Borderlands franchise and are excited to be in active development on the next installment in the series.”
