Technology conglomerate Tencent is reportedly developing a mobile version of Elden Ring with HoYoverse’s Genshin Impact as an inspiration.
According to Reuters with sources familiar with the matter, a prototype of an Elden Ring mobile game has been in development with a few dozen developers working on it for quite some time.
In the report, sources claimed that Tencent plans to make the Elden Ring mobile game a free-to-play title with in-app purchases.
Previously, Tencent acquired the licensing rights of Elden Ring and a 16% stake from FromSoftware in 2022.
No responses have yet to be given by Tencent and FromSoftware after Reuters reached out for comments.
Released in 2022, Elden Ring was one of the year’s best-selling games and won many awards, including the Game of the Year award at The Game Awards 2022.
Last year, just days before the first anniversary of its release, the game was announced to have sold 20 million copies by publisher Bandai Namco.
An expansion DLC titled “Shadow of the Erdtree” was also announced a few days after the anniversary, although no further details beyond the title and a key art has been shared.
In December 2023, Elden Ring producer Yasuhiro Kitao released an update regarding the development of the expansion DLC and said that it is progressing well, but also suggested that the release is still far.
Meanwhile, a new entry to the Elden Ring’s DLC section was spotted on Steam data tracker SteamDB a few weeks ago, hinting that a new announcement of the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC could likely be coming soon.
