Some Zenless Zone Zero fans have been claiming the game is a victim of censorship, following alterations to various character designs since the last closed beta.
As many fans have pointed out, various characters have had their outfits altered since the previous CBT- though the one they seem to be most focused on is the Cunning Hare Nicole, who has apparently been made to wear a bra.
For the most part, a huge chunk of the changes seem to be skirting around how much exposed skin can be shown on a character to an almost mathematical level.
Still, to the very vocal communities like reddit, any kind of design change in Zenless Zone Zero is seen as censorship- regardless of how little is actually changed.
“Personally I do not care for sexualized characters whatsoever”, writes user WingardiumLeviussy. “But if censorship upsets someone I am on their side and agree that it’s stupid to reduce something like boob size”.
As far as design changes go, it’s not anything nearly as extreme- Genshin Impact previously redesigned multiple characters to appease Chinese guidelines, with some characters sporting radically different outfits that became optional costumes for players outside of the country.
It speaks to a larger issue in the gacha game community- for a genre almost entirely powered by sex appeal, the fact that most games are released to pander to the Chinese market means that they’ll have to play by its rules if they want to access it.
There is a warning for over-validating the opinions of internet commenters, however- earlier this year saw a huge meltdown with the game Limbus Company, with fans crying censorship over a character wearing a wetsuit for her summer event.
