Topaz and Numby are here pursuing enemies to the end of the world unless they pay up their debts in the second half of the Honkai Star Rail Version 1.4 update.
As the Senior Manager of the Strategic Investment Department and leader of the Special Debts Picket Team in the Interastral Peace Corporation, Topaz and her Warp Trotter partner, Numby, perform various jobs including debt collection, security, and actuarial sciences.
Topaz is a 5★ Fire-Type character who walks the Path of The Hunt, alongside her partner Numby. She specializes in focus attacks on a single enemy with Numby and has great synergies with follow-up attackers.
Deficit… (Basic ATK)
Deal Fire DMG to a single enemy target.
Trotter Market!? (Talent)
Numby fights alongside Topaz right from the start of the battle and has a set initial speed. When taking action, Numby will attack a single target in the Proof of Deby state, dealing Fire DMG to the enemy. Such an attack is considered a follow-up attack.
If an enemy under the Proof of Debt receives follow-up attacks from Topaz’s allies, Numby’s action is Advanced Forward. The action Advanced Forward effect cannot be triggered during Numby’s own turn.
When Topaz is downed, Numby will retreat.
Difficulty Paying? (Skill)
Targets a single target, throws Numby in to deal Fire DMG, and inflicts a Proof of Debt status on them, increasing the DMG they take from follow-up attacks. This attack is considered a follow-up attack.
Proof of Debt only takes effect on the most recent target it is applied to. If there are no enemies under the Proof of Debt effect, Topaz will inflict a random enemy with said status effect.
Turn a Profit! (Ultimate)
Entering the Windfall Bonanza! state, Numby’s DMG multiplier, and CRIT DMG increase. When enemies under the Proof of Debt are hit by an ally’s Basic ATK, Skill, or Ultimate, Numby’s action is Advanced Forward.
After a set number of attacks, Numby will then exit the Windfall Bonanza! state.
Explicit Subsidy (Technique)
When cast, Topaz calls Numby into the overworld. Once in the overworld, Numby will automatically sniff and search for Basic Treasures and other Trotters within a set radius.
Additionally, using this Technique causes Topaz to regenerate Energy after Numby’s first attack in the next battle. If Topaz is still in the team after winning a battle with this Technique active, there will be a small amount of additional credits to be awarded. There is a maximum limit of additional credits that can be earned per day.
Furthermore, defeating enemies within the Simulated Universe will award a small amount of additional Cosmic Fragments and there is also a small chance of obtaining a random Curio.
Ascension Traces
Overdraft (Ascension 2) – Topaz’s Basic ATK will be considered as a follow-up attack.
Financial Turmoil (Ascension 4) – Increases Topaz and Numby’s DMG dealt to enemy targets with Fire Weakness.
Stonks Market (Ascension 6) – When Numby attacks while under the Windfall Bonanza! state, Topaz additionally regenerates Energy.
Instilling the fear of debts into the enemies’ minds, Topaz has a rather interesting kit that opens up new team-building considerations. Not only is she a powerful single-target DPS, but she can also serve as specialized support for any characters who rely on follow-up attacks.
Part of this is because Topaz has a special debuff named “Proof of Debt” that she can place upon an enemy, rendering them more vulnerable to follow-up attacks. She also does not operate alone as she is accompanied by Numby, her trusty Warp Trotter sidekick. Do not be fooled by Numby’s adorable appearance as she pretty much takes care of the majority of Topaz’s damage output.
Since Topaz specializes in causing enemies to take more follow-up attack damage, all of Numby’s attacks are considered follow-up attacks. That is not all, Topaz’s Skill is also considered a follow-up attack. If Topaz has her Ascension 2 Trace, Overdraft unlocked, her Basic ATKs will also be considered as follow-up attacks. It is indeed a lot of follow-up attacks.
What’s more, since Numby is a separate entity on the battlefield, it has its own speed. Whenever an ally attacks any targets with a follow-up attack, Numby’s action will be Advanced Forward, allowing her to go ham on enemies.
Eidolons
Topaz and Numby are already quite a capable duo without any Eidolons unlocked, however, their Eidolons are very strong and can greatly enhance the overall team’s damage output. As such, they are worth considering but not required.
Eidolons | |
E1 - Future Market | |
Effects: When enemies with Proof of Debt debuff receive follow-up attacks, they will gain the Debtor status effect, increasing the CRIT DMG of follow-up attacks inflicted on them by 25%, stacking up to 2 times. If Proof of Debt is removed, the Debtor debuff is also erased.
Not only did this benefit Topaz and Numby, but also helped support other characters who rely on follow-up attack damage.
E2 - Bona Fide Acquisition
Effects: Topaz regenerates 5 Energy every time Numby takes action.
Greatly improves Topaz's energy regeneration and allows Numby to enter Windfall Bonanza! state more frequently.
E3 - Seize the Big and Free the Small
Effects: Increases Skill level by 2, and their max level to 15. Increases Basic ATK level by 1, and their max level to 10.
More stats are always welcome.
E4 - Agile Operation | |
Effects: Whenever Numby takes action, Topaz's action is Advanced Forward by 20%.
Depending on the team, this can allow Topaz to take turns a lot, thus also allowing Numby to take action more frequently as well. More turns also effectively boost the damage output of Topaz and Numby.
E5 - Inflationary Demand
Effects: Increases Ultimate level by 2, and their max level to 15. Increases Talent level by 2, and their max level to 15.
An increase in Ultimate and Talent stats is always welcome.
E6 - Incentive Mechanism
Effects: Increases the attack count which Numby can do in its Windfall Bonanza! state to 3 instead of 2, and increase its Fire Resistance Penetration by 10%.
A straightforward Eidolon that helps bolster the damage output of Topaz and Numby significantly. |
Recommended Relics and Planar Ornaments
When building her Relics and Planar Ornaments, focus on boosting her offensive stats to maximize her damage output. This means you should focus on hitting the recommended 1:2 CRIT Rate CRIT DMG ratio as well as boosting her ATK stats.
A recommended build setup is to run 2 pieces of the following Relic sets as the 2-piece bonuses offer consistent stats increase, allowing for more flexibility when maximizing Topaz’s overall stats:
Stats Priority | |||
CRIT Rate / CRIT DMG | SPD / ATK% | Fire DMG Boost% | ATK% |
Substats Priority | CRIT Rate/CRIT DMG → ATK% → SPD
Recommended Relic Sets
2-Piece Bonus - Increases Fire DMG by 10%. | Recommended to run 2 pieces instead as Topaz does not utilize her Skill as much, the 4-piece bonus is not worth completing.
Firesmith of Lava-Forging | 4-Piece Bonus - Increases the wearer's Skill DMG by 12%. After unleashing Ultimate, increases the wearer's Fire DMG by 12% for next attack.
2-Piece Bonus - ATK increases by 12%. | Straightforward ATK and SPD increase.
Musketeer of Wild Wheat | 4-Piece Bonus - The wearer's SPD increases by 6% and Basic ATK DMG increases by 10%.
2-Piece Bonus - Increases SPD by 6%. | Helps Topaz to reach higher SPD breakpoints. Also, allow Topaz to take a more supportive role if you choose to run 4 pieces of this Relic set.
Messenger Traversing Hackerspace | 4-Piece Bonus - When the wearer uses their Ultimate on an ally, SPD for all allies increases by 12% for 1 turn(s). This effect cannot be stacked.
Recommended Planar Ornaments
2-Piece Bonus - Increases the wearer's CRIT Rate by 8%. When the wearer's current CRIT Rate reaches 50% or higher, the wearer's Ultimate and follow-up attack DMG increases by 15%. | Most recommended. Enhances many of Numby's follow-up attacks.
2-Piece Bonus - Increases the wearer's ATK by 12%. When the wearer's SPD reaches 120 or higher, the wearer's ATK increases by another 12%. | Easier to farm in the Simulated World than in other Planar Ornaments. Perform worse than Inert Salsotto. |
Suggested Light Cones
Much like the other 5★ limited characters in Honkai Star Rail, Topaz’s signature Light Cone will be her best-in-slot as it has been specially designed to complement her kit.
Her signature Light Cone is “Worrisome, Blissful” and its effects are as follows:
- Increase the wearer’s CRIT Rate by 18% and their follow-up attacks’ DMG by 30%. After the wearer uses a follow-up attack, apply the Tame state to the target, stacking up to 2 stacks. When allies hit enemy targets under the Tame state, every Tame stack increases the CRIT DMG dealt by 12%.
Alternatively, here are some other great Hunt Light Cone options in Honkai Star Rail for Topaz and Numby:
5★ Light Cone(s) | ||||
Increases the wearer's CRIT rate by 8%, and increases their CRIT rate against enemies with HP less than or equal to 50% by an extra 8%. When the wearer defeats an enemy, their ATK is increased by 20% for 2 turn(s). | Extremely good free-to-play option as it is obtainable from Herta's Store of Simulated Universe, including the Superimposition materials. However, Topaz and Numby will have to defeat enemies to consistently achieve high DMG potential.
Cruising in the Stellar Sea
Increases the wearer's CRIT DMG by 30%. When the wearer's Basic ATK or Skill does not result in a CRIT Hit, increases their CRIT Rate by 36% for 1 turn. This effect can be only triggered 1 time every 3 turn(s). | A good option for its CRIT-oriented bonuses. The CRIT Rate bonus only applies periodically thus inconsistent performances.
Sleep Like the Dead | ||||
4★ Light Cone(s) | ||||
For each time the wearer hits the same target, DMG dealt increases by 8%, stacking up to 5 time(s). This effect will be dispelled when the wearer changes targets. | Help ramp up Numby's damage through its effect. On high Superimposition, this Light Cone can compete with even some 5★ Light Cones in terms of personal damage output.
Swordplay | ||||
Increases the wearer's ATK by 16%. If there are 2 or fewer enemies on the field, increases wearer's CRIT Rate by 12%. | Gaining additional ATK and CRIT Rate is always welcome. However, the CRIT Rate bonus only triggers if there are only 2 or fewer foes, thus may not perform well against multiple enemies.
Only Silence Remains |
Final Thoughts
As the tax collector for the IPC, Topaz and her sidekick Numby are a pair of a rather intriguing hybrid duo in Honkai Star Rail, taking on the role of a secondary damage dealer but also as a dedicated support for follow-up attackers.
Being the first dedicated support for the follow-up mechanic, while also being a Hunt character, most of Topaz’s personal damage relies on enemies getting hit by follow-up attacks, thus limiting her team choices. In follow-up-centric teams, however, Topaz shines as she is capable of contributing a fair amount of damage especially when the damage boost to follow-up is a separate multiplier, which will only improve over time.
With a powerful kit to boost follow-up attack damage, characters who have such mechanics are immediately enhanced when pairing up with Topaz. A unit that will receive plenty of benefits is Jing Yuan, who not only is a formidable DPS with the right setup but also solves Topaz’s weakness as a Hunt character, the AoE coverage.
Clara is also a powerful ally to Topaz as their follow-up attack mechanics complement each other. To solve Clara’s energy issue, Tingyun is the support of choice, increasing the times Clara activates her Ultimate. Other great damage-dealing allies to consider are Himeko, Herta, and Yanqing.
All in all, Topaz and Numby are a great duo if you have great follow-up characters to complement her. As the first of her kind, her strength will only grow over time as other potential allies join the Astral Express. However, note that she requires quite a heavy investment in stats. That said, if you have the right setup for her, she can be quite formidable, thus a recommended character for that reason.
