Final Fantasy is a series with a long and winding history. It’s come a long way from the small NES game that saved Squaresoft from bankruptcy by copying Dragon Quest. Not only are Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on the way, but Square Enix is bringing the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster collection of the first six games in the series to PlayStation and Switch.
While it’s easy to write these games off as relics of the past, each of them added innovative new ideas that would shape not only the franchise but the RPG genre as a whole. This extends from creating the ATB system to popularizing the job system to creating great stories integrated into the gameplay.
So before the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster comes to consoles, let’s take a look at each game and what they brought to the table.
