Sega and Nier creator Yoko Taro have revealed a new mobile game called 404 GAME RE:SET (pronounced Error Game Reset), a game that sees Sega characters recreated as anime girls.
The plot of the game takes place in an alternate universe where Sega acts as an oppressive organization that controls almost everything. To defeat them the player teams up with humanized versions of Sega franchises, the ones shown in the trailer include Virtua Fighter, Virtua Cop, Outrun, and After Burner.
“From infrastructure to entertainment, Sega reigns supreme in every field. One day, a player living in such a world meets the mysterious existence “X”. Players who know that this world has been distorted by Sega will throw themselves into battle with Sega to restore the original world”.
According to Gematsu, the game was developed by Sega with Taro as the creative director. The character designs were done by the artist Yuugen who previously did the character designs for the light novel series Outbreak Company.
Here is a look at the four Sega series characters they”ve released for 404 GAME RE:SET so far. Each is based on Sega’s classic arcade games from the 80s/90s although as more characters get introduced I wouldn’t be surprised if we eventually saw a girl based on Sonic running around the Sega-themed dystopia.
The game is also holding a pre-registration campaign on its Twitter account. If it gets over 300,000 pre-registrations, all players will receive 10 gacha gems when the game launches.
The title is planned to launch on iOS and Android mobile devices in Japan in the Spring of 2023.
