miHoYo has finally obtained a license to publish Honkai Star Rail in China, bringing the game one step closer to its eventual release.
In a report by Reuters, it’s explained China has approved 88 new titles including Honkai Star Rail, granting them a license to publish the game in the country.
It should be noted that miHoYo’s other announced title, Zenless Zone Zero, was not mentioned.
miHoYo and their overseas publishing arm, Hoyoverse have not commented on the approvals following Reuters’ report.
China’s license requirement and the freezing of approvals has largely been believed to be behind the delay for Honkai Star Rail, which was announced 2 years ago.
That being said, neither miHoYo nor Hoyoverse have ever commented on the issue being related to the game having no release date.
While the game has had multiple closed betas, we’d been far off from other, more concrete news leading up to a launch, like pre-registration or any kind of release date announcement.
The closest we’d gotten was a surprise appearance by the game in a Chinese iPad commercial, promising the game would come out some time in 2023.
Honkai Star Rail is the next big title expected out of miHoYo- set after the events of Honkai Impact 3rd and ditching the action-based combat in favor of a turn-based roguelite.
miHoYo themselves are joined by Netease and Tencent as big publishers receiving part of the 88 new licenses.
