Wizards of the Coast has announced they’d be making a huge change to D&D going forward, replacing the in-game ” Race ” term.
In a blogpost, Wizards said they would be using the new One D&D to test the new replacement in the tabletop RPG, instead opting for species instead.
“We understand “race” is a problematic term that has had prejudiced links between real world people and the fantasy peoples of D&D worlds. The usage of the term across D&D and other popular IP has evolved over time. Now it’s time for the next evolution”, the blogpost reads.
One D&D is Wizards’ new platform for getting community feedback on new ideas, and while they’ve said they’re open to changing the word ‘species’ the move away from race isn’t up for discussion.
“We have made the decision to move on from using the term “race” everywhere in One D&D, and we do not intend to return to that term”, they said.
While race in the real world is a social construct used to differentiate people on a variety of factors, it’s actually functionally different in the tabletop- your race in the RPG can go from a more familiar human to elves to even reptilian and night-blind dragonborn.
