Bayonetta voice actor Hellena Taylor has opened up about her absence from Bayonetta 3- urging fans to boycott the game following mistreatment by Platinum Games.
In a series of Twitter videos, Hellena Taylor explains that Platinum Games tried to get her to reprise her role as Bayonetta in the third game for a flat fee of 4000 USD.
“The final offer to do the whole game, as a buyout, was 4000 US Dollars”, she says, comparing it to her 7 years of experience. “This is an insult to me, the amount of time I took to work on my talent, and everything I have given to this game and to the fans”.
Taylor also urged fans to boycott Bayonetta 3, instead spending the money on charity.
It should be noted that according to Taylor, this wasn’t even the original pay: she described the 4000 as being brought up only after she’d personally written to Hideki Kamiya, having previously been offered “an insulting number”.
“I got a reply saying that he values greatly my contribution to the game and that the fans really want me to voice it over. The memory of first meeting me as Bayonetta ‘is a memory I hold dear’ “, she says. “So I thought ‘oh great, thank God’. That was when they offered me 4000 US Dollars”, she says.
“You know, Platinum had the cheek to say that I was busy”, she says. “That they ‘couldn’t make it work with Ms Taylor’s schedule’. Well I had nothing but time”, she says.
While not referencing it directly, Bayonetta creator Hideki Kamiya has seemingly alluded to the controversy in his own tweet.
“Sad and deplorable about the attitude of untruth. That’s what all I can tell now”, he says, before reminding fans of his infamous Twitter rules.
This certainly is a dramatic turn for Bayonetta fans, who’d long suspected Taylor’s absence from the game to be a fake-out: considering Bayonetta 3 deals with alternate realities, many had hoped the new voice actor to be the result of a twist that Taylor’s portrayal of the character would feature alongside the new actress, Jen Taylor.
However, the reality does make the accusations all the more damning: with the multiple Bayonettas that do appear in the game as shown in the marketing, it would be an even worse look for the studio to know they tried to cheap out in a game where they were having their lead voice actor voice multiple roles.
