Following the reveal of more gameplay for Black Myth: Wukong, a viral Twitter thread has called out on discriminatory remarks attributed to the devs, Game Science.
The remarks include claiming that AAA games didn’t need female players, “jokes” about fat and/or gay people, and overall general vulgarity. There is a weibo post with a collection of comments, attempting to clarify the situation. The situation can be roughly understood as follows:
- “AAA games don’t need female players” is from a user not affiliated with Game Science, but with screenshots of the comments being in close proximity with an official post has resulted in this misattribution
- However, these discriminatory remarks have been allegedly made in a Game Science recruitment post, making them sound unprofessional at best, and reflecting the unsavoury company culture at worst
- Additionally, the art director supposedly claimed that men and women have different views about games, in relation to God of War. While these comments are dated in 2013, it’s hardly a good look
It should go without saying that these are not remarks that should be tolerated if we want to have the gaming industry be welcoming and inclusive to people of all walks of life. At time of writing, there has been no response from the Game Science devs to the incidents both old and new, so this is likely to be brought up again whenever there are more reveals for Black Myth: Wukong.
People are voicing their unwillingness to support the game and the team, which could spell potential danger for the success of the title. As it stands, it would appear that a handful of people could potentially bring down an entire game project. At the very least, some acknowledgements or clarification from the team should go some way in facilitating the discussion, but until then, we will have to see how the situation develops.
