Netflix has dropped the first trailer for Cyberpunk: Edgerunner, an upcoming anime based on the CD Project Red video game Cyberpunk 2077. The anime will premier in September 2022.
The anime is being produced by acclaimed animation Studio Trigger and directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi, the man known for hit programs like Gurren Lagann, Kill La Kill, and Promare. He also did a short for the Star Wars Visions anime anthology.
You can check out the trailer below. It certainly contains the same detailed, high octane sakuga that Imaishi and Trigger are known for:
“The series tells a standalone, 10-episode story about a street kid trying to survive in Night City — a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future. Having everything to lose, he stays alive by becoming an edgerunner — a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk.”
Studio Project Red first announced the Cyberpunk anime back in 2020 before the launch of the game. As this is a “standalone” story, viewers probably won’t need any knowledge of Cyberpunk 2077 to watch and enjoy Edgerunner.
In addition to Trigger, the anime is being produced by CD Project Red and Rafał Jaki who has previously worked on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Cyberpunk 2077, and The Witcher: Ronin. The soundtrack for the anime has been composed by Akira Yamaoka, the musician behind the iconic soundtracks for many of the Silent Hill games.
The video game Cyberpunk 2077 is available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One with next-gen versions planned for release in the near future.
