It all started when PlayStation updated their banner to feature Death Stranding, amid a list of first-party titles by PlayStation studios.
Following the acquisition of studios like Destiny developer Bungie, this had lead fans to assume that an announcement that Kojima Productions was joining the PlayStation Studios group was on the horizon.
However, the Death Stranding director took to Twitter, clarifying that Kojima Productions wasn’t quite in the market just yet.
“It sounds misleading, but Kojipro has been and will continue to be an independent production studio”, Kojima says.
The misleading part was in reference to Kojima himself tweeting the banner, leading many to take it as confirmation of the PlayStation acquisition.
This whole debacle has been a sample of the games industry in macrocosm- as major players like Microsoft and Sony consolidate power by acquiring studios, fanboys for either side are desperate for their “team” to get all the good ones.
It’s no surprise Kojima Productions would be a rumored acquisiton, either. The PlayStation pattern seems to be acquiring studios that develop games for the platform already, often times exclusively, and the release of Death Stranding fits it to a tee.
