Players from Geek Fam and Team OP have come under investigation of the MPL Committee, the body overseeing the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang esports scene. The MPL MY committee’s notice on Facebook does not outright state the exact reasons for the investigation, basically calling for professionalism and healthy sportsmanship, but as it’s understood, a player has been caught on record using racist epithets.
The incident in question occurred when Geek Fam’s Nik Aqieff (Dominus) was streaming Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. He encountered toxic players, one of whom was identified as a professional player for Team OP, who are currently competing in MPL SG (Singapore). Insults included branding Dominus’ team as “terrorists”, derisively saying “Allah teach u that?” and other unsavoury phrases. MPL SG has also acknowledged the incident, issuing their own statement, with essentially the same message.
Dear MPL SG Community,
We are aware of the incident involving Geek Fam (MPL MY) and Team OP (MPL SG) which transpired this morning, 29th March 2022, on Tuesday. We are currently investigating this issue which involves unprofessional behaviour from players.
Professionalism and ethical behaviour are part of our core principles in shaping healthy competition amongst our players and community. Let’s build a harmonious ecosystem together and develop esports into a platform we can be proud of.
MPL SG Committee
Neither Geek Fam nor Team OP appear to have made any correlating notice to their Mobile Legends fans, which is pretty understandable. At time of writing, no official update has been made over the incident either, which is likely to result in reprimands at the very least.
