Reviewing games sounds like the best job and the world (and it is), that is until you really start thinking about the simple question of what makes a game good. Are the graphics good, is the story overbearing, is it too difficult, or too easy. It’s ultimately all subjective but it can be daunting with how much you really need to look at.
It certainly doesn’t help so many different kinds of games seem to be emerging out of the ether. In the past three weeks we’ve had, a souls-like (Elden Ring), fighting game (Persona 4 Arena Ultimax), JRPG (Triangle Strategy), racing game (Gran Turismo) and we’ll soon be getting a platformer (Kirby and The Forgotten Land) and a horror-action title (Ghostwire Tokyo). It’s pretty packed and if you’re not familiar with a certain genre, it can be pretty hard to figure out what fans are looking for from a game.
That’s why in this week’s newsletter, we’ve come up with a review cheat sheet of sorts. Something that can help you figure out what features to look out for when judging certain game genres. Since we’ve got a lot of game genres to cover, this newsletter will be split into two parts. For this first part, we’ll be looking at horror, sports, rogue-like, and platformer games.
The second will go live in the next newsletter so stay tuned. If you’d like to read either of these articles for tips on reviewing games, sign up for our newsletter with your email below (it’s Free!):
