Square Enix Super Famicom RPG Live A Live, will be released outside Japan for the first time for the Nintendo Switch. The game will launch on the 22nd of July.
The was announced at the February 2022 Nintendo Direct. Here’s is a trailer that came alongside the announcement:
The game is not only being ported but has undergone a 2D HD remake similar to the style of Octopath Traveler and the upcoming Triangle Strategy.
Live A Live follows seven different playable characters, set between different places and time periods such as a cowboy in the wild west and a knight in the middle ages. As the story progresses, however, the different character’s plots eventually begin to intertwine in unexpected ways.
The RPG was originally released by Squaresoft for the Japanese Super Nintendo or Super Famicom in 1994 but was never brought overseas. A reason for this was never given however Ted Woosley, the translator who wrote the English script for Final Fantasy VI and many other Square RPGs at the time said it was due to the low graphical quality compared to Square’s other games.
The game was later fan translated by Aeon Genesis and maintained a small cult following in the west. The game is often remembered for its dark and subversive narrative for an RPG at the time.
This HD remake will be released for the Switch on July 22nd, 2022, almost 30 years after its initial release in Japan. The game can be pre-ordered on the Nintendo Eshop.
