At 23 years of age, Tengen Uzui from Demon Slayer is married with 3 wives. His secret was revealed in a YouTube video posted by Crunchyroll.
Note that while the video was posted by Crunchyroll yesterday, the snippet was first shown at the end of Demon Slayer season 2 episode 5. Protagonist Tanjiro reveals the Taisho-era secret behind the Sound Hashira’s polygamy. However, the short snippet skips out a fair bit of trivia regarding the backstory surrounding his marriages.
Demon Slayer manga readers will know that Tengen is born in the Uzui family, a clan of Shinobi alongside 8 other siblings. As part of the family’s tradition, when the sons turn 15 years old, the family head will select three wives for said son.
In Tengen’s case, while Makio and Hinatsuru were chosen to be his wives, Suma volunteered herself to be his wife. Originally, it was Suma’s sister who was supposed to be a candidate for Tengen’s wife, but due to her love for him, Suma stepped up to the task instead.
While the depiction of Tengen’s polygamous relationship with his wives is consensual, users on social media criticised the character and the series as a whole due to the notion of female discrimination. You can learn more about it here.
