Yoji Shinkawa, well known for his camouflage military-style art used in the Metal Gear Solid games has created art for a recently announced Magic: The Gathering Card. It will be released on February 18th, 2022 as part of the Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty expansion.
The card with art from the Metal Gear illustrator was announced on the Japanese Magic: The Gathering website and will be a variant for the upcoming card ‘Satoru Umezawa’. He is the main character in a recent short story for Magic: The Gathering that reveals the story of the character Kaito Shizuki.
The art for the main card will have two variants, one by done Raita Kazama, who was a character designer for Xenoblade Chronicles X, and one by Yoji Shinkawa.
The card will be a part of the Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty expansion which will combine a futuristic aesthetic with traditional Japanese Ukiyo-e art and culture. The setting of Kamigawa was originally introduced in the 2004 expansion, The Chronicles of Kamigawa. This expansion will take place over 1200 years after the events of that story.
As of right now, the card is only available as a buy a box promo. This means that you’ll have to buy a booster box of Magic: The Gathering from a specific retailer that it’s exclusive to. Given that this card was announced on the Japanese Magic website, it is currently unknown if it will be translated outside of Japan or to what capacity.
