With the Razer Kaira X headphones, you get an extremely great baseline experience for your PS5. It’s a plug-and-play tool- no fancy setup, just plug it in to your controller to get a great audio experience.
One problem with headphones can often be that they get too complicated. While customization is great, sometimes you just don’t want to have a million apps to sift through to get a great audio experience.
Does erring on the side of simplicity work out for these pocket beauties? Or is a lack of options basically a death sentence for headphones? Read on and find out.
The Physique of the Razer Kaira X
Better yet, they’re incredibly comfy. Unlike many headphones on the market, the Razer Kaira X are incredibly light, while also feeling incredibly secure on your head as you use them. Personally I totally forgot they were on my head several times, instead wondering why everyone in the world wasn’t speaking since I had game audio blasting in my ears while talking to people.
They’re especially great for long sessions since they don’t put as much of a strain as some bulkier headphones- just plug them in, don’t put down your controller and you’re good to go.
Being made with consoles in mind, the Razer Kaira X does come with a microphone as well, which you can reposition to match your mouth position. It’s a perfectly serviceable microphone, and should do you great for any team games that need you to relay messages quickly to your teammates.
It also has another underrated feature for headphones, and that’s audio controls on the headpones themselves. Too often, I find headphones would rather have a control module along the cable for the headphone, which can cause you trouble if you bump into it while gaming (I’m especially prone to this, I’ll accidentally hit the volume dial and ruin my audio).
With the Razer Kaira X instead the volume dial and microphone mute are all on the headphones themselves, so you never have to worry about accidents like that happening again. Admittedly, you’ll need to get used to controlling it without looking for maximum comfort- but that’s a skill you can easily learn in a few days.
My one gripe with the design of the Razer Kaira X is that it’s blatantly designed with consoles in mind. The wire is not long at all, so it’s really only designed to be plugged into a controller rather than, say, a PC setup. It’s not bad per se- a long cable on a controller is its own nightmare. But if you just wanted to chill out on your laptop listening to some good music be careful about the length.
Amazing Audio Quality
The Razer Kaira X also works amazingly with the PS5’s proprietary 3D Audio technology. Using the Razer Triforce 50mm audio drivers, you can get some amazing sound quality out of these. The best example would be in Housemarque’s award-winning Returnal, which is just about the best test platform for anyone looking to try out the 3D audio.
The world of Returnal is incredibly atmospheric and creepy, and the Razer Kaira X depicts it perfectly. It meshes really well with the headphones’ own light weight, as you feel like you can pinpoint every atmospheric sound on Atropos before you suddenly find yourself dodging alien projectiles again as if it was you crash-landed on an alien world and forced into a gross time loop.
Seriously, from the rustling of foliage to the creepy sound effects of Returnal, you really feel immersed even though you’ve just made your 20th death in a row. It’s an experience best enjoyed on headphones and the Kaira X is a great vessel for that experience.
It’s not just gaming either- if you decide to take a chill day to just listen to music, you’ll find the Razer Kaira X’s audio drivers give you an excellent experience there, too. Well-mastered tracks feel amazing to listen to, as you can clearly make out the difference between background instruments and main ones.
Even if you’re listening to music not made in the digital age like John Coltrane, it’s still easy to be serenaded to sleep by the dulcet tones of good jazz thanks to both the high quality audio as well as the comfortable setup.
Closing Thoughts
At RM299, the Razer Kaira X is incredible value for money for anyone with a steady gaming setup. If you’re using a laptop or just gaming on your PS5, this is probably your best price-to-quality ratio out there considering you’re getting great audio quality, full gaming functionality and just a damn comfy experience thrown in for the heck of it.
If you’re the type of gamer to play long sessions, I couldn’t recommend this enough, and you can pick it up yourself at the Razer web store.
