Demon Slayer’s Tengen Uzui criticised for having multiple wives

Tengen Uzui, a major character in Demon Slayer‘s second season, was criticised on social media for having multiple wives. The Sound Hashira is one of the central characters of this season, focusing on the Entertainment District arc.

The pilot episode introduced anime watchers to Tengen’s three wives—Makio, Suma, and Hinatsuru. A now-deleted tweet from a Japanese Twitter user went viral for taking a jab at Demon Slayer and Tengen’s consensual polygamous relationship.

The tweet reads:

It seems like the second season of the Demon Slayer anime has started, but it made me want to vomit when I found out that the protagonist, Tengen Uzui, has a polygamous relationship with three wives. A great stir was created just for the fact that it was set in a brothel, however, do the producers want to promote discrimination against women? I can’t help but think that they are deliberately trying to agitate feminists. It’s a protest, actually.

The nature of polygamy is a subject of constant debate. Depending on where you live or your culture/religious beliefs, the status of polygamy ranges from illegal to acceptable. In Muslim countries like Malaysia, Muslim men are legally allowed to have up to 4 wives, though the practice is not as common as it once was.

Other examples of polygamy in recent anime include Regulus Corneas from Re:Zero, who has over 200 wives. Unlike Tengen Uzui, however, Regulus Corneas’ relationship with his many wives may not be fully consensual.
