The 2020 Overwatch League Season starts out strong with packed events at New York City and Dallas! Ten of the twenty Overwatch League teams played at these two locations, bringing to life the league’s city-based vision to crowds. Both days in New York City and Dallas’ Saturday event were sold out.
The New York Excelsior hosted Boston Uprising, London Spitfire, Paris Eternal and Toronto Defiant at the iconic Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan over the last weekend. Meanwhile, the Dallas Fuel hosted Los Angeles Gladiators, Los Angeles Valiant, Vancouver Titans, and defending Overwatch League champions San Francisco Shock at Arlington Esports Stadium.
Since the inaugural 2018 Overwatch League season, the League has planned a city-based model where teams compete in their markets in front of home fans. That vision is reality now with home crowds packed in roaring in week one. Thousands of fans shook the 114 year-old venue in New York, roars of “MVP! MVP! MVP!” echoing for home-town hero, Sung-hyeon “JJoNak” Bang who was 2018 Overwatch League Most Valuable Player before the matches began. Dallas saw a sea of Fuel kits in full force.
Fans not in New York or Dallas saw it all on YouTube, the exclusive streaming partner worldwide for Activision Blizzard Esports’ live broadcasts (excluding China). Find the full 2020 schedule here, while tickets can be purchased here. The rest of the North American teams will start their seasons in Philadelphia, home of Fusion, next weekend. Home matches in China for February and March have been cancelled to protect the health and safety of players, fans, and staff.
